Obama Presidency Abandons The Term "enemy Combatant"

On March 13, 2009 United States Attorney General Eric Holder issued a statement that the United States had abandoned the Bush administration term "enemy combatant". The statement said, ""As we work toward developing a new policy to govern detainees, it is essential that we operate in a manner that strengthens our national security, is consistent with our values, and is governed by law." However, various human rights groups noted it as primarily a symbolic act. The United States continues to hold detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Famous quotes containing the words presidency, abandons, term and/or enemy:

I once told Nixon that the Presidency is like being a jackass caught in a hail storm. You’ve got to just stand there and take it.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)

I am a dreamer of words, of written words. I think I am reading; a word stops me. I leave the page. The syllables of the word begin to move around. Stressed accents begin to invert. The word abandons its meaning like an overload which is too heavy and prevents dreaming. Then words take on other meanings as if they had the right to be young. And the words wander away, looking in the nooks and crannies of vocabulary for new company, bad company.
    Gaston Bachelard (1884–1962)

The term clinical depression finds its way into too many conversations these days. One has a sense that a catastrophe has occurred in the psychic landscape.
    Leonard Cohen (b. 1934)

I am sure care’s an enemy to life.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
