The original station was opened on 1 October 1888 by the Midland Railway and was modernised by the London, Midland and Scottish railway (LMS), and closed as part of the Beeching Axe on 22 March 1965. The station was re-opened by the Yorkshire Dales Railway (Embsay Railway) on 22 February 1981. It was brought back to its former glory in the days of the LMS.
In December 2004, the TV soap Emmerdale used the station for the location of Hotten station.
On 6 February 2008, a new signal box arrived, an original from 1892 (Midland Railway). The signal box is to add character to the station.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Both place and time were changed, and I dwelt nearer to those parts of the universe and to those eras in history which had most attracted me.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“We dont know when our name came into being or how some distant ancestor acquired it. We dont understand our name at all, we dont know its history and yet we bear it with exalted fidelity, we merge with it, we like it, we are ridiculously proud of it as if we had thought it up ourselves in a moment of brilliant inspiration.”
—Milan Kundera (b. 1929)
“The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, through their eyes. Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs?”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
