Elmo Zumwalt - Death

Death

Admiral Zumwalt died on January 2, 2000, aged 79, at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, from a rare form of lung cancer called pleural mesothelioma. Most likely, at some time in his naval career, Zumwalt was exposed to asbestos, which was widely used on naval vessels until its hazards became known. In recent decades, it has largely gone out of use.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

    I could lie down like a tired child,
    And weep away the life of care
    Which I have borne and yet must bear,
    Till death like sleep might steal on me,
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

    If it be aught toward the general good,
    Set honor in one eye, and death i’th’ other,
    And I will look on both indifferently;
    For let the gods so speed me as I love
    The name of honor more than I fear death.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    When death comes too near, comedy and tragedy fall silent.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
