Electric Susceptibility - Definition of Volume Susceptibility

Definition of Volume Susceptibility

Electric susceptibility is defined as the constant of proportionality (which may be a tensor) relating an electric field E to the induced dielectric polarization density P such that:

where

  • is the polarization density;
  • is the electric permittivity of free space;
  • is the electric susceptibility;
  • is the electric field.

The susceptibility is also related to the polarizability of individual particles in the medium by the Clausius-Mossotti relation. The susceptibility is related to its relative permittivity by:

So in the case of a vacuum:

At the same time, the electric displacement D is related to the polarization density P by:

Famous quotes containing the words definition of, definition and/or volume:

    Scientific method is the way to truth, but it affords, even in
    principle, no unique definition of truth. Any so-called pragmatic
    definition of truth is doomed to failure equally.
    Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)

    The definition of good prose is proper words in their proper places; of good verse, the most proper words in their proper places. The propriety is in either case relative. The words in prose ought to express the intended meaning, and no more; if they attract attention to themselves, it is, in general, a fault.
    Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)

    Bishop Berkeley destroyed this world in one volume octavo; and nothing remained, after his time, but mind; which experienced a similar fate from the hand of Hume in 1737.
    Sydney Smith (1771–1845)
