Parliamentary Election

There was a period of single party system between 1945 and 1989 during the communism, in which only the Communist Party was available for voting, while until 1945 there was no universal suffrage for the women. The table below show only the elections since 1990, when the government was changed to republic.
The last parliamentary elections were held in Bulgaria on 5 July 2009. The decisive winner with 40% of the vote was Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (or GERB) party, led by Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov.
The majority vote provided additional 31 seats corresponding to the constituencies of the 28 Provinces of Bulgaria with an additional 3 reserved for the most populated cities of Sofia and Plovdiv. The elected majoritarian candidates are elected through first past the post method. GERB gained 26 seats, while Movement for Rights and Freedoms gained 5 of them. After receiving additional seats from the majority vote in total GERB amassed 117 out of 240 seats in the parliament and is to head a centre-right government alone.
