Eldon Square Shopping Centre
In the 1960s the west and north terraces around the square were demolished to be replaced by part of Eldon Square Shopping Centre which now dominates Old Eldon Square.
Some renovation was completed in 2008 and the square now features new landscaping and ground level access to the shopping centre.

Famous quotes containing the words square, shopping and/or centre:
“This house was designed and constructed with the freedom of stroke of a foresters axe, without other compass and square than Nature uses.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The most important fact about our shopping malls, as distinct from the ordinary shopping centers where we go for our groceries, is that we do not need most of what they sell, not even for our pleasure or entertainment, not really even for a sensation of luxury. Little in them is essential to our survival, our work, or our play, and the same is true of the boutiques that multiply on our streets.”
—Henry Fairlie (19241990)
“Here in the centre stands the glass. Light
Is the lion that comes down to drink. There
And in that state, the glass is a pool.
Ruddy are his eyes and ruddy are his claws
When light comes down to wet his frothy jaws”
—Wallace Stevens (18791955)
