Famous quotes containing the words american, classic and/or races:
“One of the grotesqueries of present-day American life is the amount of reasoning that goes into displaying the wisdom secreted in bad movies while proving that modern art is meaningless.... —Harold Rosenberg (19061978)
“Instead of stubbornly attempting to use surrealism for purposes of subversion, it is necessary to try to make of surrealism something as solid, complete and classic as the works of museums.”
—Salvador Dali (19041989)
“Arrive at New Orleans, a city of ships, steamers, flatboats, rafts, mud, fog, filth, stench, and a mixture of races and tongues. Cholera, some. [At] Planters Hotel. Mem:Never get caught in a cheap tavern in a strange city.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
