Classification
The ranges are subdivided by several deeply intended river valleys, mostly running in east-west direction like the Inn, Salzach, Enns, Adige, Drava and Mur. According to the traditional Alpine Club classification of the Eastern Alps widely used by Austrian and German mountaineers, these mountain chains comprise several dozen small regions, each assigned to three larger groups:
- Northern Limestone Alps
- Central Eastern Alps
- Southern Limestone Alps.
The Swiss Alpine Club has set up a slightly different classififcation concerning the ranges in the canton of Graubünden.
In recent year the International Standardized Mountain Subdivision of the Alps concept has been developed by the Italian Alpine Club as a proposal for normalizing and standardizing the different national classification systems. Fuller details are given on those pages of the regions they contain.
