East Bengal F.C.
East Bengal Football Club is an Indian I-League football club based in Kolkata, West Bengal. One of the most successful clubs in Indian football, it has won 3 National Football League and I-League titles and 8 Federation Cups. East Bengal is tied for the record for the longest uninterrupted period in the Indian top flight.
They are the current holders of the Federation Cup and the Indian Super Cup.
East Bengal was founded in 1920 in Kolkata and in 1996 became one of the first clubs to join the first ever National Football League in 1996. On 28 July 1920 Mohun Bagan were supposed to play Jorabagan but Bagan dropped Sailesh Bose which angered Jorabagan's Vice-President Suresh Chaudhuri. He then cut ties with Bagan and formed East Bengal club on 1 August 1920. The club made history in 1997 when they became the first Indian football club to join official Asian competition when they played in the Asian Cup Winners Cup.
East Bengal has a long-standing rivalry with neighbours Mohun Bagan, with whom it contests the Kolkata derby.
