Prediction Methods

Earthquake prediction, as a branch of seismology, is an immature science in the sense that it cannot predict from first principles the location, date, and magnitude of an earthquake. Research in this area therefore seeks a reliable basis for predictions in either empirically derived precursors, or some kind of trend or pattern.

Famous quotes containing the words prediction and/or methods:

Recent studies that have investigated maternal satisfaction have found this to be a better prediction of mother-child interaction than work status alone. More important for the overall quality of interaction with their children than simply whether the mother works or not, these studies suggest, is how satisfied the mother is with her role as worker or homemaker. Satisfied women are consistently more warm, involved, playful, stimulating and effective with their children than unsatisfied women.
    Alison Clarke-Stewart (20th century)

Parents ought, through their own behavior and the values by which they live, to provide direction for their children. But they need to rid themselves of the idea that there are surefire methods which, when well applied, will produce certain predictable results. Whatever we do with and for our children ought to flow from our understanding of and our feelings for the particular situation and the relation we wish to exist between us and our child.
    Bruno Bettelheim (20th century)
