Earl of Devon - Second Creation, 1469

Second Creation, 1469

The Yorkists had made Humphrey Stafford, son and heir of Humphrey Stafford of Hooke, Dorset, their agent in the West Country, and on 17 May 1469 he was created Earl of Devon. He was a 'three months Earl'. He was sent to fight Robin of Redesdale, one of the commanders of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, divided his own forces, and was captured and beheaded at Bridgwater, 17 August 1469. He left no issue, and with his death the second creation of the earldom became extinct.
