Plans
The airport was used by the South African Air Force and the Police Air Wing during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, before being decommissioned.
Although it is currently unclear as to what the future usage of the airport site will be, it is widely expected that the site will be used for future industrial development. The site is located on a large parcel of flat land in the Durban South Industrial Basin, which is already home to much of the city's heavy industry; given Durban's generally very hilly terrain, such a large, flat parcel is ideal for future industrial development, port expansion, or both.
No provision was made during the planning and construction of KSIA to accommodate the South African Air Force base at DIA, thus AFB Durban, 15 Squadron and related support units are still operating from this airport. However, overhead photography in 2012 displays 7 large letters "X" painted across the runway. This is the conventional, internationally recognized symbol indicating the runway is permanently closed and unsuitable for use.

Famous quotes containing the word plans:
“In order to become spoiled ... a child has to be able to want things as well as need them. He has to be able to see himself as a being who is separate from everyone else.... A baby is none of these things. He feels a need and he expresses it. He is not intellectually capable of working out involved plans and ideas like Can I make her give me...? If I make enough fuss he will...? They let me do ... yesterday and I want to do it again today so Ill....”
—Penelope Leach (20th century)
“When I heard at the close of the day how my name had been receivd
with plaudits in the capitol, still it was not a happy night for me
that followd,
And else when I carousd, or when my plans were accomplishd,
still I was not happy,
But the day when I rose at dawn from the bed of perfect health,
refreshd, singing, inhaling the ripe breath of autumn,”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
“The human mind plans the way, but the LORD directs the steps.”
—Bible: Hebrew, Proverbs 16:9.
