2013: London Rematches
On November 28, 2012, it was announced that the Drake Relays will enter a new era with the 104th Drake Relays April 24-27, 2013. Hy-Vee will become presenting sponsor. Through the sponsorship, the relays will offer a $50,000 purse in running events and $25,000 purse in field events, making the Drake Relays the richest Track & Field event in the United States. Further, 90 minutes of action will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
The Relays' road races will also offer $120,000 in prize money. In addition to the Wellmark Grand Blue Mile, the 10 km race, and a half marathon, there will be a new 6 km race run in conjunction with Character Counts.
As a result of this announcement, 16 Olympians from the 2012 Summer Olympics have committed to participating in the 2013 Drake Relays. This had led the 2013 Relays to be dubbed London Rematches with all three medal winners from the Men's 110-Meter Hurdles & the Men's 400-Meter Hurdles confirmed along with 3 other gold medal winners from London.
