Early Life and Early Gaming

Don Kaye was born on June 27, 1938. He grew up in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where at age 6, he became friends with Gygax, who had visited and later moved there from Chicago, Illinois in 1946. They began playing miniature war games in 1953. Gygax and Kaye designed their own miniatures rules for toy soldiers, with a large collection of 54 mm and 70 mm figures, and used "ladyfinger firecrackers" to simulate explosions. In 1965, Kaye, Gygax, Mike Reese, and Leon Tucker created a military miniatures society, Lake Geneva Tactical Studies Association (LGTSA), with its first headquarters in Gygax's basement, and later held meetings in Kaye's garage.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or gaming:

Some men have a necessity to be mean, as if they were exercising a faculty which they had to partially neglect since early childhood.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

The spring is here, young and beautiful as ever, and absolutely shocking in its display of reckless maternity; but the Judas tree will bloom for you on the Bosphorus if you get there in time. No one ever loved the dog-wood and Judas tree as I have done, and it is my one crown of life to be sure that I am going to take them with me to heaven to enjoy real happiness with the Virgin and them.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

Sir, I do not call a gamester a dishonest man; but I call him an unsocial man, an unprofitable man. Gaming is a mode of transferring property without producing any intermediate good.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)
