Background
Domingo "Ding" Chavez is a Rainbow operative of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six universe. Born in Los Angeles, California, in 1968, grew up in a rough neighborhood, and joined a gang as a teenager. After the death of a friend at the hands of a rival gang, however, he joins the U.S. Army to escape street life. Domingo was first recruited to be a member of a secret CIA-run anti-drug operation in Colombia in Clear and Present Danger, while he was still a Staff Sergeant (E-6) in the Army. He first meets John Clark during the events of this novel and works with him thereon. He has at least two advanced degrees and is fluent in English, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Persian. He is married to John Clark's daughter, Patricia, and have a child, John Conor Chavez. He, along with Clark, rescue a Japanese politician who was a former prime minister (and later re-elected) in Debt of Honor. Soon after the events in the Japanese conflict, Domingo works again with John Clark in implementing "Plan Blue" (recruitment of law enforcement officers as intelligence officers) during Executive Orders. Clark and Chavez lead multiple operations for President Ryan in this novel, some of them inside Iran. He later was recruited into and became a team leader (with the rank of simulated major) in the multinational counter-terrorist organization RAINBOW in Rainbow Six. Together they defeat several terrorist groups and prevented a bioterrorism plague. He is later promoted to Director of Rainbow also referred to as "Six" (after the events of Rainbow Six: Critical Hour) a position formerly held by his father-in-law, John Clark.
He reappears in Dead or Alive, set after Ryan leaves the Presidency, as a veteran Rainbow member. After he and John lead a Rainbow team in a successful hostage rescue at the Swedish embassy in Libya, they are forced to retire from the CIA. Chavez and Clark then accept jobs with "The Campus", an off-the-books intelligence agency founded by Ryan late in his administration. They immediately go on the trail of "The Emir", an international terrorist leader (obviously based on Osama bin Laden) who was planning a series of attacks against the U.S.

Famous quotes containing the word background:
“In the true sense ones native land, with its background of tradition, early impressions, reminiscences and other things dear to one, is not enough to make sensitive human beings feel at home.”
—Emma Goldman (18691940)
“Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“I had many problems in my conduct of the office being contrasted with President Kennedys conduct in the office, with my manner of dealing with things and his manner, with my accent and his accent, with my background and his background. He was a great public hero, and anything I did that someone didnt approve of, they would always feel that President Kennedy wouldnt have done that.”
—Lyndon Baines Johnson (19081973)
