Powers and Abilities

Doctor Strange has been described as "the mightiest magician in the cosmos", and as "more powerful by far than any of your fellow humanoids" by Eternity, the sentience of the Marvel Universe. The entity known as the Stranger considers him on a level with cosmic entities. And he has defeated several cosmic or other-dimensional adversaries (see below), including the In-Betweener, and the Beyonder stated that once, when in a disoriented state, he encountered Strange, who had him at a disadvantage and could have defeated him.
The character has held the title of "Sorcerer Supreme" from when this was presented in print in 1973, to the present with only an interruption from December 1992 to August 1995. He relinquished the title once again in New Avengers #54 (Aug. 2009), and has not yet reclaimed it as of 2012. He was once taught black magic by his foe Kaluu in order to destroy the entity Shuma-Gorath, but Kaluu was forced to purge the black magic from Strange after it became apparent it was becoming addictive and corruptive.
Strange draws power from several mystical entities, such as the Vishanti (Hoggoth, Oshtur, and Agamotto) and the Octessence (Balthakk, Cyttorak, Farallah, Ikonn, Krakkan, Raggadorr, Valtorr, and Watoomb). These entities usually lend their power to a particular effect, such as the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, which are used by Strange to entrap foes. Strange can use magic to achieve virtually any effect he desires, such as energy blasts, teleportation, astral projection, telepathy, (including the ability to to contact others telepathically even if his body is paralyzed,) the creation of materials (such as food and water), creating planet-wide protective shields, restoring himself from bodily destruction, resurrecting the dead, stopping and reversing time, sealing black holes, restoring universes, absorbing enough power to unconsciously destroy galaxies, growing to the size of and merging with universal concepts, and co-operatively channeling the mass of the entire Marvel Universe.

Famous quotes containing the words powers and/or abilities:
“A man is the prisoner of his power. A topical memory makes him an almanac; a talent for debate, disputant; skill to get money makes him a miser, that is, a beggar. Culture reduces these inflammations by invoking the aid of other powers against the dominant talent, and by appealing to the rank of powers. It watches success.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“We should spend less time ranking children and more time helping them to identify their natural competencies and gifts and cultivate these. There are hundreds and hundreds of ways to succeed and many, many different abilities that will help you get there.”
—Howard Gardner (20th century)
