Diggers Rest Railway Station - History

History

Diggers Rest station opened on 2 October 1859 with the line, being the terminus until the line was extended to Woodend in 1861. A small goods shed and siding were provided at this time. Interlocked gates were provided at Old Calder Highway in 1928, and were replaced with boom barriers in 1982. The goods siding was removed in 1989 and the remaining crossover was removed in 1992.

Following a $270 million investment in 2010 from the Victorian State Government, the station will be included on the metropolitan network on electrification of the line from Watergardens to Sunbury. This project is due to be complete in 2012 and will connect Diggers Rest to metropolitan services rather than the less frequent regional services.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The only history is a mere question of one’s struggle inside oneself. But that is the joy of it. One need neither discover Americas nor conquer nations, and yet one has as great a work as Columbus or Alexander, to do.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

History, as an entirety, could only exist in the eyes of an observer outside it and outside the world. History only exists, in the final analysis, for God.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

[Men say:] “Don’t you know that we are your natural protectors?” But what is a woman afraid of on a lonely road after dark? The bears and wolves are all gone; there is nothing to be afraid of now but our natural protectors.
Frances A. Griffin, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 19, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)
