Life
Dian Fossey was born in San Francisco, California to George E. Fossey III, an insurance agent, and Kathryn "Kitty" (Kidd) Fossey, a fashion model. Her father was a US Navy sailor. Her parents divorced when Dian was aged 6. Her mother remarried the following year, to businessman Richard Price. Her father tried to keep in contact, but her mother discouraged it, and all contact was subsequently lost. At age six, she began horseback riding, earning a letter from her school; by her graduation in 1954, Fossey had established herself as an equestrian.

“Its not that we have too much mother, but too little father. We cant forgive our mothers for taking the place of our fathers until we are ready to see that the point of a mans life is to be a father and a mentor, and we cant do that because we dont know how we would be a father or a mentor when we never had one.”
—Frank Pittman (20th century)
“You haf slafed your life away in de bosses mills and your fadhers before you and your kids after you yet. Vat is a man to do with seventeen-fifty a week? His wife must work nights to make another ten, must vork nights and cook and wash in day an vatfor? So that the bosses can get rich an the stockholders and bondholders. It is too much... ve stood it before because ve vere not organized. Now we have union... We must all stand together for union.”

“The feeling of being hurried is not usually the result of living a full life and having no time. It is on the contrary born of a vague fear that we are wasting our life. When we do not do the one thing we ought to do, we have no time for anything elsewe are the busiest people in the world.”
—Eric Hoffer (19021983)
