On February 6, 2011, Rehberg announced that he would challenge Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) in 2012. The outcome of the race was expected to have a significant impact on which party controls the United States Senate during the 113th Congress.

According to Salon, it was a "race that pundits are saying could be a tough challenge for Tester." Political Scientist Larry Sabato predicted a narrow Rehberg victory, pointing out that Rehberg had lead in 10 of 13 recent polls. However, Tester eventually defeated Rehberg, 48.7% – 44.8%.

Famous quotes containing the words senate and/or election:

I think the Senate ought to realize that I have to have about me those in whom I have confidence; and unless they find a real blemish on a man, I do not think they ought to make partisan politics out of appointments to the Cabinet.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

Savages cling to a local god of one tribe or town. The broad ethics of Jesus were quickly narrowed to village theologies, which preach an election or favoritism.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
