Famous quotes containing the word philosophy:

There is no philosophy without the art of ignoring objections.
    Joseph De Maistre (1753–1821)

It is said to be compensation—a very philosophical word; but it appears to be very much on the principle of the old game, “You lose, I win”: good philosophy for the winner.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

The great critic ... must be a philosopher, for from philosophy he will learn serenity, impartiality, and the transitoriness of human things.
    W. Somerset Maugham (1874–1965)
