Democratic Deficit - United Kingdom

United Kingdom

Devolution was introduced in 1998 in Scotland and Wales, but not in England.

The Labour Party is in favour of devolution to Regions of England, whereas the Conservative Party prefers "English Votes on English Laws". Some political parties such as the English Democrats Party want a full English parliament. The Liberal Democrats are currently reviewing their policies on this subject.

Famous quotes containing the words united and/or kingdom:

The city of Washington is in some respects self-contained, and it is easy there to forget what the rest of the United States is thinking about. I count it a fortunate circumstance that almost all the windows of the White House and its offices open upon unoccupied spaces that stretch to the banks of the Potomac ... and that as I sit there I can constantly forget Washington and remember the United States.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

Many a reformer perishes in his removal of rubbish,—and that makes the offensiveness of the class. They are partial; they are not equal to the work they pretend. They lose their way; in the assault on the kingdom of darkness, they expend all their energy on some accidental evil, and lose their sanity and power of benefit.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
