Named Geological Features
Only two geological features on Deimos have been given names. The craters Swift and Voltaire are named after writers who speculated on the existence of Martian moons before they were discovered.
| Crater | Named after | Coordinates | Diameter (m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swift | Jonathan Swift | 12°30′N 358°12′W / 12.5°N 358.2°W / 12.5; -358.2 (Swift) | 1000 |
| Voltaire | Voltaire | 22°00′N 3°30′W / 22°N 3.5°W / 22; -3.5 (Voltaire) | 1900 |

Famous quotes containing the words named, geological and/or features:
“who should moor at his edge
And fare on afoot would find gates of no gardens,
But the hill of dark underfoot diving,
Closing overhead, the cold deep, and drowning.
He is called Leviathan, and named for rolling,”
—William Stanley Merwin (b. 1927)
“The crystal sphere of thought is as concentrical as the geological structure of the globe. As our soils and rocks lie in strata, concentric strata, so do all mens thinkings run laterally, never vertically.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“It looks as if
Some pallid thing had squashed its features flat
And its eyes shut with overeagerness
To see what people found so interesting
In one another, and had gone to sleep
Of its own stupid lack of understanding,
Or broken its white neck of mushroom stuff
Short off, and died against the windowpane.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
