The defence industry, also called the military industry, comprises government and commercial industry involved in research, development, production, and service of military materiel, equipment and facilities. It includes:
- Defense contractors: business organizations or individuals that provide products or services to a military department of a government
- The Arms industry, which produces guns, ammunition, missiles, military aircraft, and their associated consumables and systems
It can also include:
- Private military contractors: private companies that provide logistics, manpower, and other expenditures for a military force
- European defence procurement, which is more or less analogous to the U.S. "military-industrial complex"
Famous quotes containing the words defense and/or industry:
“Though a censure lies against those who are poor and proud, yet is Pride sooner to be forgiven in a poor person than in a rich one; since in the latter it is insult and arrogance; in the former, it may be a defense against temptations to dishonesty; and, if manifested on proper occasions, may indicate a natural bravery of mind, which the frowns of fortune cannot depress.”
—Samuel Richardson (1689–1761)
“My plan of instruction is extremely simple and limited. They learn, on week-days, such coarse works as may fit them for servants. I allow of no writing for the poor. My object is not to make fanatics, but to train up the lower classes in habits of industry and piety.”
—Hannah More (1745–1833)
