Legacy
Following the deaths of Senna and Ratzenberger, many safety improvements were made. Although other drivers had died before him, Senna had arguably been the highest profile.
While Formula One drivers have died driving historic cars since Senna's death, no driver has died behind the wheel of a contemporary Formula One car, despite large accidents still occurring. However, trackside marshals at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix and the 2001 Australian Grand Prix have been killed as a result of flying debris from crashes.
