Early Political Career
Primarolo joined the Labour Party in 1973 and was first elected to Parliament at the 1987 general election, after the constituency party de-selected Michael Cocks, the sitting MP.
At the time of her election, she was regarded as a hard left-winger and is still often referred to by the media as "Red Dawn", but became a New Labour loyalist and "absolutely loyal to New Labour", leading Andrew Roth of The Guardian to say she has "changed from 'Red Dawn' to 'Rosy Pink'"; as part of this change, she has moved from support of CND, the rise of which originally encouraged her into politics, to voting for the renewal of Britain's Trident nuclear defence. She also unsuccessfully lobbied the Soviet government of Mikhail Gorbachev to rehabilitate Leon Trotsky. She is a former member of Avon County Council.

Famous quotes containing the words early, political and/or career:
“And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea.”
—Bible: New Testament, Matthew 14:25.
“What drivel it all is!... A string of words called religion. Another string of words called philosophy. Half a dozen other strings called political ideals. And all the words either ambiguous or meaningless. And people getting so excited about them theyll murder their neighbours for using a word they dont happen to like. A word that probably doesnt mean as much as a good belch. Just a noise without even the excuse of gas on the stomach.”
—Aldous Huxley (18941963)
“The problem, thus, is not whether or not women are to combine marriage and motherhood with work or career but how they are to do soconcomitantly in a two-role continuous pattern or sequentially in a pattern involving job or career discontinuities.”
—Jessie Bernard (20th century)
