U.S. Army

At the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, rather than waiting for the draft, he volunteered for the U.S. Army to have some choice in assignments. Having food production and service experience, Thomas requested the Cook's and Baker's School at Fort Benning, Georgia. After his discharge in 1953, Thomas returned to Fort Wayne and the Hobby House.

Famous quotes containing the word army:

We should have an army so organized and so officered as to be capable in time of emergency, in cooperation with the National Militia, and under the provision of a proper national volunteer law, rapidly to expand into a force sufficient to resist all probable invasion from abroad and to furnish a respectable expeditionary force if necessary in the maintenance of our traditional American policy which bears the name of President Monroe.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

    Roach, foulest of creatures,
    who attacks with yellow teeth
and an army of cousins big as shoes ...
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
