Dario Gradi - Early Life and Playing Career

Early Life and Playing Career

Born to an Italian father (who died when Dario was a small child) and an English mother, Gradi moved to London when his mother returned after the Second World War.

He trained as a teacher of physical education at what is now Loughborough University and his first (and only) teaching position was at Glyn Grammar School, Epsom, the school which he himself had attended. He joined Sutton United, playing in the FA Cup tie against Leeds United in 1970, and then represented Tooting & Mitcham United. During that time Gradi also owned and operated a sportswear and equipment shop in Ewell village.

The problem is simply this: no one can feel like CEO of his or her life in the presence of the people who toilet trained her and spanked him when he was naughty. We may have become Masters of the Universe, accustomed to giving life and taking it away, casually ordering people into battle or out of their jobs . . . and yet we may still dirty our diapers at the sound of our mommy’s whimper or our daddy’s growl.
    Frank Pittman (20th century)

A normal adolescent is so restless and twitchy and awkward that he can mange to injure his knee—not playing soccer, not playing football—but by falling off his chair in the middle of French class.
    Judith Viorst (20th century)

My ambition in life: to become successful enough to resume my career as a neurasthenic.
