- Actor Josh Brolin was nominated for an Academy Award for playing Dan White in Gus Van Sant's 2008 biographical film Milk, which opened with wide release from Focus Features. The film suggests that Milk believed White may have been a closeted gay man. However, there is no evidence to suggest that Dan White was homosexual. Sean Penn won the academy award for best actor. Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:
“For those that love the world serve it in action,
Grow rich, popular and full of influence,
And should they paint or write, still it is action:
The struggle of the fly in marmalade.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
“I am writing to resist the view that Europe and civilization are going to Hell. If I am being crucified for an ideaMthat is, the coherent idea around which my muddles accumulatedit is probably the idea that European culture ought to survive, that the best qualities of it ought to survive along with whatever cultures, in whatever universality. Against the propaganda of terror and the propaganda of luxury, have you a nice simple answer?”
—Ezra Pound (18851972)
