Synthesis
Cp2Fe2(CO)4 was first isolated as an intermediate in the synthesis of ferrocene from iron pentacarbonyl and dicyclopentadiene and has since been found as a byproduct of many organoiron reactions. Cp2Fe2(CO)4 is synthesized by the reaction of Fe(CO)5 and dicyclopentadiene.
- 2 Fe(CO)5 + C10H12 → (C5H5)2Fe2(CO)4 + 6 CO + H2
In this preparation, dicyclopentadiene cracks to give cyclopentadiene, which reacts with Fe(CO)5 concomitant with loss of CO. Thereafter, the pathways for the photochemical and thermal routes differ subtly but both entail formation of a hydride intermediate.

Famous quotes containing the word synthesis:
“Our art is the finest, the noblest, the most suggestive, for it is the synthesis of all the arts. Sculpture, painting, literature, elocution, architecture, and music are its natural tools. But while it needs all of those artistic manifestations in order to be its whole self, it asks of its priest or priestess one indispensable virtue: faith.”
—Sarah Bernhardt (18451923)
“In order to begin an analysis, there must already be a synthesis present in the mind.”
—Johan Huizinga (18721945)
“The invention of photography provided a radically new picture-making processa process based not on synthesis but on selection. The difference was a basic one. Paintings were madeconstructed from a storehouse of traditional schemes and skills and attitudesbut photographs, as the man on the street put, were taken.”
—Jean Szarkowski (b. 1925)
