Cradle Mountain - Flora

Flora

The area is covered in a wide variety of alpine and sub-alpine vegetation, including the colourful deciduous Nothofagus gunnii (Deciduous Beech), itself an anomaly given that most Australian native flora is evergreen, and Gymnoschoenus sphaerocephalus (Button Grass) which dominates the alpine wet sedgelands along side Pineapple Grass and Alpine Coral Fern. The native Bush Pepper can be found growing abundantly on hillsides and scrubland, commonly in Tasmanian Snow Gum stands. Other plants that grow on the mountain include Alpine Buzzy, Tasmanian Eyebright, Alpine Raspberry, Scoparia Heath, Mountain Rocket, Waratah, Cheshunt Pine and Pencil Pine. Within valleys around the Cradle Plateau, rainforest species such as Myrtle Beech, Pandani, Sassafras, King Billy pine and Celery Top Pine form thick, lichen-strewn forests with dense mossy undergrowth.
