The Council has 25 members. The current council was elected in June 2009. The towns of Leixlip, Naas, Newbridge and Athy have separate town councils under the Local Government Act 2001.

As part of the Mid-East Region, it is within the purview of the Mid-East Regional Authority.

For elections to the European Parliament, it is part of the East constituency which returns three MEPs.

Famous quotes containing the words local, government and/or politics:

The local snivels through the fields:
    I sit between felt-hatted mums....
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

Our long national nightmare is over. Our Constitution works; our great Republic is a government of laws and not of men. Here the people rule.
    Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)

From the beginning, the placement of [Clarence] Thomas on the high court was seen as a political end justifying almost any means. The full story of his confirmation raises questions not only about who lied and why, but, more important, about what happens when politics becomes total war and the truth—and those who tell it—are merely unfortunate sacrifices on the way to winning.
Jane Mayer, U.S. journalist, and Jill Abramson b. 1954, U.S. journalist. Strange Justice, p. 8, Houghton Mifflin (1994)
