County Cork - People

People

The people of County Cork are often very vocal in their praise and admiration of their home county. This is especially true if they are based outside of Cork or are speaking of it to people of other counties. This has become somewhat of a joke among other Irish people. Cork people even sometimes refer to their native county as a separate country, the so-called "People's Republic of Cork" and claim to desire independence from the rest of the country. There is also a joking belief among the population of Cork that it is the "Real" capital of Ireland and they frequently refer to it as such.

Famous quotes containing the word people:

So what if people say terrible things? Whatever they call me, I say, “Yes, and my name is Mary.” I refuse to be afraid. And I do this out of an obligation not to the community but to myself. Nobody should have a say in who I am.
    Mary Hansen (b. c. 1975)

It is true, these Roman Catholics, priests and all, impress me as a people who have fallen far behind the significance of their symbols. It is as if an ox had strayed into a church and were trying to bethink himself. Nevertheless, they are capable of reverence; but we Yankees are a people in whom this sentiment has nearly died out, and in this respect we cannot bethink ourselves even as oxen.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

After all, when you come right down to it, how many people speak the same language even when they speak the same language?
    Russell Hoban (b. 1925)
