Popular Culture
After the release of the movie Gladiator sales of the Meditations rose sharply, and as Claudius Maximus is identified only by the name "Maximus" in the very first book of the Meditations, this apparently led some to believe there might have been a connection between the Maximus of the Meditations and the Maximus Decimus Meridius of Gladiator. No documentation appears to back this up however. Rather, the original name of the movie's main character was Narcissus, identifying him with the gladiator who is believed to have ended Emperor Commodus' life. Later versions of the character incorporated other classical historical influences however there seems to be no connection between Claudius Maximus of the Meditations and the Maximus of Gladiator.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:
“Popular culture is seductive; high culture is imperious.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“That popular fable of the sot who was picked up dead-drunk in the street, carried to the dukes house, washed and dressed and laid in the dukes bed, and, on his waking, treated with all obsequious ceremony like the duke, and assured that he had been insane, owes its popularity to the fact that it symbolizes so well the state of man, who is in the world a sort of sot, but now and then wakes up, exercises his reason and finds himself a true prince.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The white dominant culture seemed to think that once the Indians were off the reservations, theyd eventually become like everybody else. But they arent like everybody else. When the Indianness is drummed out of them, they are turned into hopeless drunks on skid row.”
—Elizabeth Morris (b. c. 1933)
