Early Life
Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle was born to Lons le Saunier, under the arcades of the Rue du Commerce, where his mother was descended from the Montaigu market. A plaque was placed under the arches at the precise spot. Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle was the eldest son of Claude Ignace Rouget (April 5, 1735 - August 6, 1792) at Orgelet and Jeanne Madeleine Gaillande (July 2, 1734 - March 20, 1811).

Famous quotes related to early life:
“Many a woman shudders ... at the terrible eclipse of those intellectual powers which in early life seemed prophetic of usefulness and happiness, hence the army of martyrs among our married and unmarried women who, not having cultivated a taste for science, art or literature, form a corps of nervous patients who make fortunes for agreeable physicians ...”
