Clairemont High School - History

History

The school is named for the Clairemont neighborhood where it is located.

When CHS opened its doors in 1958, it consisted of no senior class; a junior class (class of 1960) consisting mostly of transfers from Mission Bay High School in nearby Pacific Beach and Kearny High School; and a sophomore class (class of 1961) coming from its neighbor, Marston Junior High. There was no freshman class.

In 1960, the two closest rivals were Kearny High School and Mission Bay High. Their current rivals are crosstown locals Madison High.

Mary Catherine Swanson started the AVID program at Clairemont High in 1980 with 32 students.

Clairemont High includes a program for highly gifted students (scored in the 99.9%ile on a mental ability test) called the GATE Seminar program.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Racism is an ism to which everyone in the world today is exposed; for or against, we must take sides. And the history of the future will differ according to the decision which we make.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)

We don’t know when our name came into being or how some distant ancestor acquired it. We don’t understand our name at all, we don’t know its history and yet we bear it with exalted fidelity, we merge with it, we like it, we are ridiculously proud of it as if we had thought it up ourselves in a moment of brilliant inspiration.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)

... that there is no other way,
That the history of creation proceeds according to
    Stringent laws, and that things
Do get done in this way, but never the things
We set out to accomplish and wanted so desperately
    To see come into being.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
