Christian V of Denmark

Christian V Of Denmark

Christian V (Danish: Christian den Femte 15 April 1646 – 25 August 1699), was king of Denmark and Norway from 1670 to his death in 1699, the son of Frederick III of Denmark and Sophie Amalie of Brunswick-Lüneburg. He married Landgravine Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel on 14 May 1667 at Nykøbing and ascended the throne on 9 February 1670.

He was the first king anointed at Frederiksborg Castle Chapel as absolute monarch since the decree that institutionalized absolutism and the supremacy of the Danish monarch in the reign of his father. Christian V wanted to show his power as absolute monarch through architecture, and dreamed of a Danish Versailles. He was the father of Frederik IV. His motto was: Pietate et Justitia (With piety and justice).
