Relationship With The CDU
The CSU is the sister party of the Christian Democratic Union. Together, they are called 'The Union'. The CSU operates only within Bavaria, and the CDU operates in all other states, but not Bavaria. While virtually independent, at the federal level, the parties form a common CDU/CSU fraction. No Chancellor has ever come from the CSU, although Franz Josef Strauss and Edmund Stoiber were CDU/CSU candidates for Chancellor in the 1980 election and the 2002 election, respectively, which were both won by the SPD. Below the federal level, the parties are entirely independent.
Since its formation, the CSU has been more conservative than the CDU.

Famous quotes containing the word relationship:
“Christianity as an organized religion has not always had a harmonious relationship with the family. Unlike Judaism, it kept almost no rituals that took place in private homes. The esteem that monasticism and priestly celibacy enjoyed implied a denigration of marriage and parenthood.”
—Beatrice Gottlieb, U.S. historian. The Family in the Western World from the Black Death to the Industrial Age, ch. 12, Oxford University Press (1993)
