Chelsea and Westminster Hospital - History

History

The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital was opened on the site once occupied by St Stephen's Hospital, and brought together staff, services and equipment from five London hospitals:

  • The Westminster Hospital in Horseferry Road (previously situated opposite Westminster Abbey) and its medical school in Page Street
  • Westminster Children's Hospital, originally in Vincent Square, then later amalgamated with the Westminster
  • West London Hospital, opened in 1860 and known from the early 1970s for its maternity services
  • St Mary Abbot's Hospital, an infirmary occupying the site of what had been the Kensington work house
  • St Stephen's Hospital

The new hospital was designed by the architects Sheppard Robson. It displays many treasures from the old hospitals. Some of these are in the first floor Hospital Chapel, including a 16th-century painting by Veronese from the Westminster Hospital and stained glass windows from Westminster, St Mary Abbots and the Westminster Children's Hospitals.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

I cannot be much pleased without an appearance of truth; at least of possibility—I wish the history to be natural though the sentiments are refined; and the characters to be probable, though their behaviour is excelling.
    Frances Burney (1752–1840)

This above all makes history useful and desirable: it unfolds before our eyes a glorious record of exemplary actions.
    Titus Livius (Livy)

Throughout the history of commercial life nobody has ever quite liked the commission man. His function is too vague, his presence always seems one too many, his profit looks too easy, and even when you admit that he has a necessary function, you feel that this function is, as it were, a personification of something that in an ethical society would not need to exist. If people could deal with one another honestly, they would not need agents.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)
