Chechen People

Chechen People

Chechens (Chechen: Hохчий Noxc̈iy; Old-Chechen: Naxc̈u, Naxc̈ij, Naxc̈ Q̈am) constitute the largest native ethnic group originating in the North Caucasus region. They refer to themselves as Noxc̈iy (singular Noxc̈i or Noxc̈o). Also historically known as Sadiks (Isod people), Dzurdzuks and Gargareans. The isolated mountain terrain of the Caucasus and the strategic value outsiders have placed on the areas settled by Chechens has contributed much to the Chechen community ethos and helped shape national character. Chechen and Ingush peoples are collectively known as the Vainakh.

Famous quotes containing the word people:

All people who have reached the point of becoming nations tend to despise foreigners, but there is not much doubt that the English-speaking races are the worst offenders. One can see this from the fact that as soon as they become fully aware of any foreign race they invent an insulting nickname for it.
    George Orwell (1903–1950)
