History
Central Casting was established in 1925 initially as a wing of the major Hollywood movie studios. By the 1970s they came to dominate the field of extras casting.
The name of this company had developed into a jargon term denoting a generic or a stereotypical location where someone could travel to and cast a specific character type for a specific type of film or television production.
The term Central Casting is also in widespread use outside of the film industry. For example, a person who happens to strongly match a particular stereotype is said to be: "Straight out of Central Casting."
In April 2006, Central Casting opened its New York division.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Boys forget what their country means by just reading the land of the free in history books. Then they get to be men, they forget even more. Libertys too precious a thing to be buried in books.”
—Sidney Buchman (19021975)
“Three million of such stones would be needed before the work was done. Three million stones of an average weight of 5,000 pounds, every stone cut precisely to fit into its destined place in the great pyramid. From the quarries they pulled the stones across the desert to the banks of the Nile. Never in the history of the world had so great a task been performed. Their faith gave them strength, and their joy gave them song.”
—William Faulkner (18971962)
“The history of the world is none other than the progress of the consciousness of freedom.”
—Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (17701831)
