Central administration is also a key part of the civil service in many countries, in the UK for example – the department supports the chief executive’s office and other key areas. In the United States, many arms of government have a central administration department for example in correctional facilities the office of the director is under its tutelage. It plays a role in the function of various arms of state, in India it plays a pivotal role in the functioning of the civil service. The department also plays a key role in making critical decisions for many countries, in Pakistan (which borders India) for example there has been a discussion about whether the government should bring rebellious minded tribal areas under tighter control of central administration.

Famous quotes containing the word government:
“Vanity is as advantageous to a government as pride is dangerous. To be convinced of this we need only represent, on the one hand, the numberless benefits which result from vanity, as industry, the arts, fashions, politeness, and taste; and on the other, the infinite evils which spring from the pride of certain nations, a laziness, poverty, a total neglect of everything.”
—Charles Louis de Secondat Montesquieu (16891755)
“The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
“If the dignity as well as the prestige and influence of the United States are not to be wholly sacrificed, we must protect those who, in foreign ports, display the flag or wear the colors of this Government against insult, brutality, and death, inflicted in resentment of the acts of their Government, and not for any fault of their own.”
—Benjamin Harrison (18331901)
