Cavalry Tactics - Cavalry in Modern Warfare

Cavalry in Modern Warfare

Cavalry is featured in modern warfare with cavalrymen retaining the light cavalry missions. Mechanization and motorization has changed the mounts from horse to tracked and wheeled vehicles, but the missions of reconnaissance and security remain the same. Heavy Cavalry, as such, has its role of shock effect fulfilled by tanks.

The word "cavalry" was briefly used at the advent of helicopter warfare with ("air cavalry") units. Modern doctrine has rightfully labeled such roles as infantry, termed Air Assault.

Famous quotes containing the words cavalry, modern and/or warfare:

    To fight aloud is very brave,
    But gallanter I know,
    Who charge within the bosom
    The Cavalry of Woe.
    Emily Dickinson (1830–1886)

    Tried by a New England eye, or the more practical wisdom of modern times, they are the oracles of a race already in its dotage; but held up to the sky, which is the only impartial and incorruptible ordeal, they are of a piece with its depth and serenity, and I am assured that they will have a place and significance as long as there is a sky to test them by.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    And God would bid His warfare cease,
    Saying all things were well;
    And softly make a rosy peace,
    A peace of Heaven with Hell.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
