Caracas Cathedral - History

History

The construction of the cathedral was begun in 1666 by Juan de Medina, to replace a small church that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1641. Construction was completed in 1674. The facade, dating from 1771, is the work of Francisco Andrés de Meneses. After the earthquake of 1812, one of its towers was damaged and later reduced in size. A frontispiece was constructed in the facade in 1866. In 1932 and during the 1960s restoration and modifications were made throughout the building.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Bias, point of view, fury—are they ... so dangerous and must they be ironed out of history, the hills flattened and the contours leveled? The professors talk ... about passion and point of view in history as a Calvinist talks about sin in the bedroom.
    Catherine Drinker Bowen (1897–1973)

Anyone who is practically acquainted with scientific work is aware that those who refuse to go beyond fact rarely get as far as fact; and anyone who has studied the history of science knows that almost every great step therein has been made by the “anticipation of Nature.”
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

The history of modern art is also the history of the progressive loss of art’s audience. Art has increasingly become the concern of the artist and the bafflement of the public.
    Henry Geldzahler (1935–1994)
