Cagayan River - Economic Importance

Economic Importance

The river drains a fertile valley that produces a variety of crops, including rice, corn, bananas, coconut, citrus and tobacco.

There are dams in two of the river's tributaries, the Magat and Chico Rivers, and there are also several mining concessions in the mineral-rich Cordillera Mountains near the headwaters of the two tributary rivers.

The provincial governments along the river have also developed tourism programs that offer activities on the river, particularly whitewater rafting.

Famous quotes containing the words economic and/or importance:

Three factors—the belief that child care is female work, the failure of ex-husbands to support their children, and higher male wages at work—have taken the economic rug from under that half of married women who divorce.
    Arlie Hochschild (20th century)

Coming together again after a long day apart can be an experience where joy, relief, anger, and fatigue are all present in different degrees both for the parent and for the child. Because of their importance in marking the resumption of direct contact, reunions deserve as much attention and care as separations to enhance the relationship between parent and child.
    Alicia F. Lieberman (20th century)
