Life and Career
Paltrow was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Dorothy (née Weigert) and Arnold Paltrow. Paltrow was a first cousin of Spencer J. Giffords, father of American politician and member of the United States House of Representatives Gabrielle Giffords. His family was of Eastern European Jewish descent. He studied at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the late 1960s, he began directing stage productions in New York City, where he met actress Blythe Danner, to whom he was married from December 14, 1969 until his death.
He was the producer of the television series The White Shadow and St. Elsewhere. His last production was the film Duets, which starred his daughter, Gwyneth Paltrow.
Politically, he was an ardent Democrat. Paltrow turned down Dwight Schultz from casting consideration from St. Elsewhere in a surprising display of intolerance of differing political views, due to the actor's support of Ronald Reagan. Paltrow yelled, "There's not going to be a Reagan asshole on this show!" when Schultz showed up for audition.

Famous quotes containing the words life and/or career:
“The dignity to be sought in death is the appreciation by others of what one has been in life,... that proceeds from a life well lived and from the acceptance of ones own death as a necessary process of nature.... It is also the recognition that the real event taking place at the end of our life is our death, not the attempts to prevent it.”
—Sherwin B. Nuland (b. 1930)
“A black boxers career is the perfect metaphor for the career of a black male. Every day is like being in the gym, sparring with impersonal opponents as one faces the rudeness and hostility that a black male must confront in the United States, where he is the object of both fear and fascination.”
—Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)
