Famous quotes containing the words political, history and/or gate:

    The people of Western Europe are facing this summer a series of tragic dilemmas. Of the hopes that dazzled the last twenty years that some political movement might tend to the betterment of the human lot, little remains above ground but the tattered slogans of the past.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

    I believe that history has shape, order, and meaning; that exceptional men, as much as economic forces, produce change; and that passé abstractions like beauty, nobility, and greatness have a shifting but continuing validity.
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)

    Duns at his lordship’s gate began to meet;
    And brickdust Moll had screamed through half the street.
    The turnkey now his flock returning sees,
    Duly let out a-nights to steal for fees:
    The watchful bailiffs take their silent stands,
    And schoolboys lag with satchels in their hands.
    Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)
