The book does not identify its author. Traditionally ascribed to the prophet Samuel, it is regarded by a number of scholars as a novella of probable Hellenistic-era date. A smaller number of scholars date it in either the monarchic or early post-exilic periods.

Famous quotes containing the words authorship and/or date:
“The Bible is good enough for me, just the old book under which I was brought up. I do not want notes or criticisms, or explanations about authorship or origins, or even cross- references. I do not need, or understand them, and they confuse me.”
—Grover Cleveland (18371908)
“Until I was twenty-five, I had no development at all. From my twenty-fifth year I date my life. Three weeks have scarcely passed, at any time between then and now, that I have not unfolded within myself. But I feel that I am now come to the inmost leaf of the bulb, and that shortly the flower must fall to the mould.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
