Blackwall Tunnel - Nearest Alternative Crossings

Nearest Alternative Crossings

The nearest alternative road crossings are the Rotherhithe Tunnel 2 mi (3 km) to the west, Tower Bridge 3 mi (5 km) to the west, and the Dartford Crossing 16 mi (26 km) to the east. The Woolwich Free Ferry is 2 mi (3 km) to the east however, but is often reduced to one boat in operation, or completely closed at weekends, and cannot be relied upon as an alternative road crossing. Information is given to road users about the status of operation of the Woolwich Ferry via VMS (variable message signs) on Academy road when approaching from the south side of the river, Lodge Avenue and Limehouse from the North.

Underground railway links include the Jubilee line from North Greenwich (TfL) to Canning Town on the east and Canary Wharf on the west. The Docklands Light Railway also passes under the Thames between Island Gardens at the southern end of the Isle of Dogs and Cutty Sark in the centre of Greenwich.

Pedestrians and cyclists may also use the foot tunnels at Greenwich (close to the DLR tunnel) and Woolwich (close to the Woolwich Ferry).

Famous quotes containing the words nearest and/or alternative:

When in public poetry should take off its clothes and wave to the nearest person in sight; it should be seen in the company of thieves and lovers rather than that of journalists and publishers.
    Brian Patten (b. 1946)

Our mother gives us our earliest lessons in love—and its partner, hate. Our father—our “second other”Melaborates on them. Offering us an alternative to the mother-baby relationship . . . presenting a masculine model which can supplement and contrast with the feminine. And providing us with further and perhaps quite different meanings of lovable and loving and being loved.
    Judith Viorst (20th century)
