Sun

In 1982, after the firm had been going for six months, Joy was brought in with full co-founder status at Sun Microsystems.

In 1986, Joy was awarded a Grace Murray Hopper Award by the ACM for his work on the Berkeley UNIX Operating System.

At Sun, Joy was an inspiration for the development of NFS, the SPARC microprocessors, the Java programming language, Jini / JavaSpaces and JXTA.

On September 9, 2003 Sun announced that Bill Joy was leaving the company and that he "is taking time to consider his next move and has no definite plans".

Famous quotes containing the word sun:

The sun shineth upon the dunghill, and is not corrupted.
    John Lyly (1554–1606)

O, for an engine, to keep back all clocks,
Or make the sun forget his motion!
    Ben Jonson (c. 1572–1637)

A young person is a person with nothing to learn
One who already knows that ice does not chill and fire does not burn . . .
It knows it can spend six hours in the sun on its first
day at the beach without ending up a skinless beet,
And it knows it can walk barefoot through the barn
without running a nail in its feet. . . .
    Meanwhile psychologists grow rich
Writing that the young are ones’ should not
    undermine the self-confidence of which.
    Ogden Nash (1902–1971)
