Bill James - Attacks On Dick Allen

Attacks On Dick Allen

Chuck Tanner who managed the World Series winning 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates said about James that "He's full of shit, and you be sure to tell him that." when James said Dick Allen was a cancer in the clubhouse. Tanner had managed Allen earlier in the decade with the Chicago White Sox. James also claimed that Allen was to blame for the collapse of the 1965 Philadelphia Phillies because of a fight with Frank Thomas. However according to teammate Pat Corrales Thomas was a bigot who swung a bat at Allen. Phillies manager Gene Mauch said about Allen, ""Never. His teammates always liked him. You could go forever and not meet a more charming fellow."

Famous quotes containing the words attacks on, attacks, dick and/or allen:

We are seeing an increasing level of attacks on the “selfishness” of women. There are allegations that all kinds of social ills, from runaway children to the neglected elderly, are due to the fact that women have left their “rightful” place in the home. Such arguments are simplistic and wrongheaded but women are especially vulnerable to the accusation that if society has problems, it’s because women aren’t nurturing enough.
    Grace Baruch (20th century)

The rebel, unlike the revolutionary, does not attempt to undermine the social order as a whole. The rebel attacks the tyrant; the revolutionary attacks tyranny. I grant that there are rebels who regard all governments as tyrannical; nonetheless, it is abuses that they condemn, not power itself. Revolutionaries, on the other hand, are convinced that the evil does not lie in the excesses of the constituted order but in order itself. The difference, it seems to me, is considerable.
    Octavio Paz (b. 1914)

Drug misuse is not a disease, it is a decision, like the decision to step out in front of a moving car. You would call that not a disease but an error of judgment.
    —Philip K. Dick (1928–1982)

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.
Bob Dylan [Robert Allen Zimmerman] (b. 1941)
